  10. What were two influences for the artists of the Impressionism movement? Explain how these influences can be seen in a painting.

  11. What was Claude Monet striving to achieve by painting Haystacks and Rouen Cathedral over 50 different times?

  13. In this area, paste 3 color images of artwork from the Impressionism movement. Under each label the work with title, artist, date and medium.

  14. With reference to your selected paintings, describe what the artists have painted and the characteristics/style they employed (How did they paint?) Describe the different light, colour and atmospheric effects in each painting and how the artist’s technique, style (including use of colour and tone) suggests these effects.

  15. In this area, paste one colour painting of a Realist artist (eg: Courbet, Millet). Under the image label with title, artist, date and medium.

  16. Compare your three chosen paintings with a landscape painting by an earlier, Realist artist that was completed in the studio. Answer the questions below:

  17. What differences are there between the works (consider technique, visual qualities, composition and scale)? How do the visual effects created using the Impressionist technique differ from the effects created by more traditional painting techniques? How did the practice of working en plein air to produce a finished painting differ significantly from more traditional approaches to painting the landscape?
